So why do we need rules in the first place?

Galatians 3:12-22 Its purpose was to make obvious to everyone that we are, in ourselves, out of right relationship with God, and therefore to show us the futility (pointlessness) of devising some religious system of getting by our own efforts what we can only get by waiting in faith for God to complete his promise. For if any kind of rule-keeping had power to create life in us, we would certainly have gotten it by this time.

We need rules and wisdom on how to live a holy life as Christ lived in order to guide us down the right path – but at the same time, rules show us that we are human and fail. All-the-time. Rules show us right from wrong, but when we fail to keep them, they show us our need for God’s perfection, our need of His clean slate – because ours will never be clean… let’s face it.

Christ died for us giving us HIS perfectly holy spotless clean slate and took our messed up one.

And – he doesn’t ask us to work our heads off to try and repay Him in return.

Rules show us how desperately we need God. They show us how impossible they are for us to keep. They show us we need Christ.  Our failure to keep rules and keep the law turns our eyes from ourselves and our efforts and works… to Christ, and the cross.

We must remember not to get caught up in the lie that we can somehow, by our ‘good’ behaviour, master the art of rule-keeping and somehow be our own rescuers, our own saviours. We can’t get caught on the works treadmill on speed 12 – we will fall off, crash and burn. Rest in God’s grace and freedom today.
